New to the Public Forums? Please introduce yourself: 2024!

now focusing on vintage Chanel and Hermes. I’m looking to learn as much as I can about materials, techniques, authentication, etc. Any recommendations for books and resources to study would be extremely welcome! Thank you! Happy to join this group of vintage lovers.

Hi Jennie! Welcome! You may want to check out the books in our Amazon shop (purchases support the VFG): https://www.amazon.com/shop/vintagefashionguild

We do not provide authentication, but you can ask any questions about materials and techniques. One of our members, @claireshaeffer, is a Chanel expert and a couture sewing expert.

Hi all! I've visited the public forums many times over the last few years and always found them quite helpful! I am opening an online store next month, and I know this is going to be an excellent aid in ensuring accurate dating/descriptions and learning even more about the vintage I've adored since a teen. My biggest interests at this point are learning label eras and proper cleaning. Excited to dive into the resources!

Glad you found us!

Hello @Lea Lang!

We are lucky to have a few Australian members and alumni members that may be able to help you with specific labels and designers. We certainly will help you in any way we can!

J.K. Answering a question. I googled my dad's old business and found this link. Someone here asked about "Pab". So I signed up to reply. It was my dad's cocktail dress business in the 1960's at 498 7th Ave., Manhattan. Jonny Herbert was the sister business. They were beautiful dresses.
Sold at all the finest stores, Saks 5th, Lord & Taylor, etc.
It was fun walking into the vault where dresses were being designed. Every year my dad made a hand beaded gown for my mom to wear to the Met. Gala. When she died, I gave them away to Goodwill. Pab and Jonny Herbert helped support FIT. The store name was usually listed on the cloth tab, not the business name. Hope this is helpful to the person who asked about Pab.
I have a photo of one dress from 1970 but can't upload it.

Very interesting! I couldn't find the question about Pab—were you able to respond to that? Here is how to upload a photo (if you have it scanned or digitally available) https://forums.vintagefashionguild.org/threads/faq-how-to-post-a-photo.52756/

Hi All
Came across your site when researching
white house bond street and found some useful information. I deal mainly in 1940s male clothes but do have quite a few 1940s women's items which I lend or sell for the almost weekly 1940s events all over the UK. Just a Hobby so will have a few questions. I may be able to help with the 60s and 70s questions as I probably bought them from new. View attachment 187886
Welcome! It's great to have someone with men's fashion expertise around. We look forward to getting to know you and seeing you in the forum!

Maggie from Canada here!

New to the community digitally and in general. Stumbled in here while trying to research a blazer I just purchased, unintentionally my first vintage piece. Looks like there's some insanely knowledgable people and insights being shared!
Welcome Maggie! Congratulations on your first... and most certainly not your last... piece of vintage!

Hi everyone!

My name is Emily, and I'm currently honing my skills for vintage!
I love vintage and retro jewellery, my favourite purchase being a gorgeous Georg Jensen tigers eye ring from the 60s.

I live in the UK, and love dragging my other half antiquing at the weekends!

Thank you for this wonderful community!
Welcome Emily, it's great to meet you! You're certainly in the right place!

Hi everyone!

I volunteer at our local church op shop but have also worked in high fashion in Sydney in my younger years. At our op shop our donations are incredible! We have a steady stream of designer clothes and a lot of quality pieces from around the world donated. Today I was saying if it’s not designer we can’t keep it, we have limited room. The op shop is very blessed and well love by our local community. Funds go to St John’s Youth for disadvantaged children.

Thank you for having me :)

*clothing we can’t take/fit gets donated to other op shops!
Welcome Heidi! Your church shop sounds dreamy and for such a wonderful cause!

G’day from the land down under!

I am very pleased that I found your group. I have always had a love of vintage and retro clothing. I am an avid collector of sewing patterns along with a growing collection of vintage clothing. I am eager to learn more about the items I have. I know you won’t necessarily have much info on Australian designers and labels, but I’m hoping to glean some tips on where and how to research these things. I have a little eBay shop where I sell of my sewing pattern overflow, and perhaps one day I will add clothing to my shop and join your guild as an official seller.
Welcome Lea! We have a few folks that actually specialize in vintage patterns, so you're in good company! It would be very interesting to see some of your Australia vintage labels as well.

Howdy fellow vintage clothing enthusiast persons, hope yall are having an excellent day; just figured I might as well take the time to introduce myself seeing as I am brand new about here. My name’s Munro I’m a 19yo apprentice mechanic from Winnipeg Manitoba Canada, I’ve always liked going to thrift stores with my mom even from a young age, finding a unique item that fills a niche you’ve been looking for never gets old. Yall mightn’t have guessed but yeah the dude well on his way to being a grease monkey is mostly interested in vintage men’s work and western style clothing (I do have some pretty sweet pieces that are more formal but I barely get to wear them) most of my favourite pieces I have are vintage Canadian made work clothes from the 60s up to about the 80s but I have some stuff that’s even older. I’m in no way “easy” on my clothes, they’re work clothes and I work in them, I feel like it’s only right to wear something the way it was designed to be worn. I think the reason I’m so dedicated to wearing vintage, even if I don’t necessarily baby my clothes, is that I love the cut of vintage clothes, the thick rigid fabrics, and it feels incredible to be able to put on an outfit and to be able to know that the people who made it lived a lived a decent life in a decent country, and may even have been unionized, it was someone who chose to work in textile manufacturing and likely did for most of their career, they had a passion for the clothes and it just gives them a better feel, I don’t know how to explain it.

cheers, thanks for reading the ramblings of a madman
